So,
you’re redoing the inside of
your garage, either to give yourself a fresh, new place to store
things, to cover up stains, or to sell your home.
What better way to
give it a great look than adding or updating your garage
floor paint?
Obviously, the first step is to empty your
garage, right? …but wait! You need to choose the color of
paint.
Color-wise, now is the time to consider what
else you might be
painting. Will you be painting the walls as well?
Chances are that
they’re pretty marked up from tools, lawn mowers, and perhaps
even cars bumping them. There’s a fun trend in painting
garages bright, cheerful colors.
White, off-white, and grey are not
your only options! Try a bright, limey green or a cheerful yellow. Or
whatever your favorite color is – anything that will make you
happy to be in there.
For the floor, go with a darker
color…dark grey, black, dark blue or dark
red…these colors will not show dirt as much as a lighter
color.
You might even want to try two colors of
garage floor paint. A great way to lend interest to the garage is to
have a main floor color and then a contrasting color you paint in
rectangles where the cars will park. It defines the space and looks
fun.
Now that these choices have been made, the
first step is to test whether the garage floor is sealed (if it is,
painting will not work). Drop a little water on the floor. If it beads
up, it’s sealed. If not, you’re good to go!
Get a degreaser from your home improvement
store and a stiff bristle brush and scrub up oil and grease stains. Rub
them clean with a soft cloth. Sweep up the floor and work out stains
with bleach or concrete cleaner. If you have bad stains, you may have
to resort to pressure washing.
After the floor has dried completely, repair
any cracks, then use an extension pole and roller to apply the
appropriate primer. Lastly apply the garage floor paint in the same
manner. Wait at least 24 hours and apply a second coat. Voila! A
fresh-looking garage.
